Muhanga District is one of the 8 districts that make up the Southern Province of Rwanda. It is composed of 12 sectors, 63 cells, and 331 villages. Muhanga District covers an area of 647.7 km² and has a population of 369,491 residents (Ref: MEIS Population Report 02/2022) living in 87,342 households (Ref: MEIS Population Report 02/2022).

About The District

Muhanga District is one of the 8 districts that make up the Southern Province of Rwanda. It is composed of 12 sectors, 63 cells, and 331 villages. Muhanga District covers an area of 647.7 km² and has a population of 369,491 residents (Ref: MEIS Population Report 02/2022) living in 87,342 households (Ref: MEIS Population Report 02/2022).

Muhanga District has a population density of 585 inhabitants per km².

Muhanga District borders the following districts:

  • North: Gakenke District
  • South: Ruhango District
  • East: Kamonyi District
  • West: Ngororero District

Muhanga District is divided into two main areas:

  • Urban area, which includes the sectors of Nyamabuye, Muhanga, Shyogwe, and Cyeza
  • Rural area, which includes 8 sectors, namely: Kibangu, Rongi, Kiyumba, Kabacuzi, Rugendabali, Mushishiro, Rugendabali, and Nyabinoni
